The Yellowstone Club is in court once again defending it's arse after their wildlife officer shot and killed a mother black bear on the property. It's all over the news that their first priority was to keep the incident under wraps because 1)It's illegal to kill a bear out of season,  2) It was an accident due to the fact that their wildlife officer didn't check his ammo before firing at the bear to haze it, 3) They lured the bear to their paintball field by using vegetable oil based paintballs, against good advice, and 4) They did not immediately attend to the welfare of the cubs after they killed the mother.

The Club is also, as of last week, being sued for firing an under-contract black employee without cause.

When is the Club going to get itself under control and stop embarrassing itself and our community with it's near-constant, painfully public blunders? Aren't the millionaires up there concerned about their own reputation, at least?

I just want to go on record as saying the Club is a big...

Hi guys....I am new to this site and really friendly so please don't bash me too bad, okay?  lol  I was wondering if anyone would give me their honest insight on some things about Bozeman.  I have tried reseaching these things, but there are just so many mixed opinions out there.....I am just not sure what to think!  What is the weather like each season?   Also how well are the tourists received in Bozeman?    Do you think it would be a nice place to retire to?  Can you list  both negatives and positives of living in Bozeman? I understand there was a big boom in the population over the last few years.  Do you feel that is a good thing or bad?    I will be staying in Bozeman for two weeks next summer while taking in Yellowstone and Glacier.  I love the mountains and rivers and of course will be fishing as well,  My husband tells me that I will fall in love with your beautiful town and I...

But why in the world are there so many pizza joints here?? And I thought the coffee shop quantity had reached it's carrying capacity by now. That would be a "What's up With That?" topic I would like to see covered.

Hello,

Long time reader, 4th time poster....

What are your thoughts on the new Chronicle website?

Here are mine: Really!?  Really this is the "NEW" website? Seems like a major downgrade to me. Did they pick function over form? The style of this site is already outdated one minute after they created it. I'm sorry but this site is just horrible. Safe to say I am not a fan.  Anyone else?

My friend has a 501 c3 that works with dogs slated for euthanizia within the rescue/humane society world.  How come there are no areas where politicism, jealousy, name calling, and judgmental libel doesn't take place?? I thought, in the world that saves animals, people would work together ... but she has found little to no cooperation from the dog world, business world, or similar non-profits.  There are other points to her mission, including taking senior dogs who belonged to seniors who have passed, and the rest of the family says to put that old dog to sleep.  She had a 15 year old sheltie mix from Lewistown who had 2 more good years with her, and it's something everyone should think about.  Also homed are animals belonging to soldiers of foreign wars, and victims of abuse so they can get into a shelter.  She also travels all over the Gallatin valley to train shelter adopted dogs for FREE.  Yes, I said FREE.  I'm sure a gas donation would be appreciated, but it'...

I received the United States Census 2010 today, in a bag from two very polite census people.  They asked a few questions.  Could you verify your address?  How many people live here?  Do you have a basement?  After that they handed me the bag containing the census and a message from the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau.

The message was the following:

"This is your official 2010 Census form.  We need your help to count everyone in the United States by providing basic information about all the people living in this house or apartment.   Please complete and mail back the enclosed census form today.

Your answers are important.  Census results are used to decide the number of representatives each state has in the U.S. Congress.  The amount of government money your neighborhood receives also depends on these answers.  That money is used for services for children and the elderly, roads and many other local needs.

Your answers are confidential.  This means the...

So for 6 years I had no problem getting up at the crack of dawn, fixing pig tails and lunches and changes of clothes, working a long day, coming home and doing everything in reverse, add some housework, get up in the night several times to feed the baby, then do it again the next day. (well I had one problem, I missed my kids tremendously!)

Seems I could go to work, manage 15 people's workload, be responsible for millions of dollars of life suport gear, meticulous record keeping, explosives handling, rediculous maintenance deadlines and mitigating conflict all day long from various high ranking navy/USMC "rivals" (one of them being my boss) and have a blast doing it, and yet now that I am unemployed and home with my kids full time, I am exasperated! My little "Employees" ages 3 and 8 months can't be supervised enough, aren't motivated by quitting time, payday or good evals; they are willful, stubborn, weekly staging a revolution against having a clean house and so darn cute it takes all my will not...

At first glance I thought this could be a conspiracy, Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahut, I may have been mistaken; but then again I suppose sheep are meant to be sheared, or is it fleeced, scammed, shafted, screwed, ponzied, or maybe just COINCIDENCED to death.  F.E.D. up yet?

This may be the dumbest thought I've had all day. Ready? Why can't we put bomb-sniffing devices and people-screening machines on the airplanes themselves? I know that's a LOT of airplanes, but there's also a lot of airports and terminals and checkpoints, and there's a lot that can happen between those checkpoints and the airplanes.

I guess the crux of my question is this: if the airplanes are what we need to protect (i think this is one way of looking at this problem) - what can we kit them out with, that might reduce risk? It seems like the heaviest security is quite a good ways away from where the action might happen. It's sort of like having cops at the edge of town, but none inside of the city.

I can think of lots of possible reasons why this is a dumb idea, but a wise man once said: "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

We enjoy the privilege of being served in this community by some great men and women who put their lives on the line every day in the context of some form of law enforcement...how, as a community, can we support these men, women and their families better?

I always figured Montana to be a place where people could just say what they mean, rather than clouding discussions with assertions like "creeping fill-in-the-blank-ism". I think it's better to say something like "That's a bunch of crap. And here's why..."

But that's just me.

The Chronicle reports there are now 9 lawsuits against NW Energy in connection to the March, '09 explosion in downtown Bozeman. One person flipped the wrong switch and died. Does anyone consider that this much suing could bankrupt the only energy system Montana currently has? Then what. Isn't anything just an accident anymore? It'll be interesting to serve on the Jury.

Christmas Questions asked under the protection of being anonymous:

1. Have you ever wanted to put money in a Salvation Army kettle under the condition the bellringer stops ringing the bell for a few minutes?

2. If someone gives you fruitcake for Christmas is it always the case that the person doesn't really like you?

3.  If you go to church once a year like me at Christmas do you feel like everyone is staring at you when the collection plate comes around?

4. If you buy someone a present and a gift card do you leave the price tag on the present like I do to be consistent?

5.  Do you carry mistletoe around like I do just in case you should happen to run into your best friend's ex wife?

To me, this past weekend's Santa Stumble was basically a "Drink and Party for Charity". (TAPS - Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) It happens all the time I suppose, when you consider the number of charity events held around the world where alcohol is served - but is there anything wrong with that? After 5 seconds of thought, I think I have to revert to the ideal of "It's a free country, do what you like if you ain't a-harmin' nobody else."

But in this case (opinion beginning here) it did not seem to be much more than an organized bar-hopping venture, where the chosen establishments had agreed to donate in one way or another to the cause - so drinking was the focus, whereas at charity events, drinking is NOT the intended focus, often it's just a secondary thing. But I'm sure that at least *some* of the folks who go to those events see them primarily as a booze-fest, so I can't lean on that argument too much.

I suppose at the end of the day, TAPS got donations, and lots of folks got to socialize and have...

Mansion plays host to Holiday Tea Party

The Friends of the Story Mansion held the first ever Victorian Holiday Tea Party on Sunday, serving about 100 guests at the historic home throughout the day.

Tables were set up on the first floor of the mansion, complete with donated antique tea party settings and linens. Ivy Sehulster, a descendant of the original owners of the 110-year-old home, serenaded the party-goers singing jazz accompanied by pianist Stefan Stern.

“We want a wide range of people to feel comfortable visiting the house,” said Dede Taylor, on the board of directors of the The Friends of the Story Mansion. “We’ve really accomplished a lot in one year and we’d love for people to experience it.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission, tobacco companies in the U.S. spend as much as 75% of their marketing money in tobacco retail stores – the convenience stores, gas stations and pharmacies in your neighborhood.

While the tobacco industry reaps massive profits, our kids get hooked on nicotine.

Kids (replacement smokers) in the U.S. smoke almost a billion packs of cigarettes per year. That represents a pretty good return on investment for the tobacco companies.

What are your thoughts about major cigarette companies marketing their tobacco products in your local stores?

What happened to Ken and Stephanie and our tasty Italian Bakery?  It appears that they have disappeared...  I will miss the unbelievably flaky treats, the Muffaletta sandwiches, red beans and rice, and the gumbo!

Ken and Stephanie we miss you and your food!  A note letting us know would have been nice!

Best wishes to you wherever you are, you made Bozeman better while you were here.

Is this what we have to look forward to? Why do they not have to follow their own rules for the roadways?

From the city's own website:

Sidewalk snow removal - §12.24.020 BMC

There’s an old joke about life in Montana. It goes something like this: “There are only two seasons in Montana….nine months of winter and three months of relatives.” That may not be entirely true, some relatives come for the skiing, too. If you have moved here from a warmer climate, you will want to invest in a snow shovel or snow blower. Snow accumulations of six or more inches have been recorded in Bozeman as late as mid-June and as early as the end of August.

The City Engineer’s Office is charged with administering the City’s sidewalk snow removal program. One part-time, seasonal employee is hired to inspect city sidewalks for compliance with City Ordinance 1171 and 1529. Sidewalks are inspected after each snow storm that produces a significant snowfall, with priority given to sidewalks in business districts with high pedestrian traffic. Sidewalks...

Why is plant life bad for the environment?  I don't understand.  I thought we were supposed to save the rainforests and all that.

But I have been hearing that we should start decreasing the entire planets plant air supply!  How can this be?  Save the rainforests but don't let em breathe?

I used to think more trees and plants were healthy for the earth, but no!  We need to deny them CO2 and actually start reversing the amount that they get so that the amount of trees and plants on the earth decreases and causes the earth to get warmer?

I'm confused

Based upon empirical evidence, there are increasing numbers of liberals being sighted shopping at the big box stores!  The uptick at Wal Mart has been the most notable.  Especially those who appear to be elite liberals.  Many of them dart their eyes around hoping not to be noticed.

However,  I think this is a good idea for the liberals to "transition" into their impending  lifestyle under the Obama administration.   This will lessen the blow that redistribution affects everyone.   Except of course, the extremely wealthy.

It is by no mistake that Hillary was on the board of Wal Mart as it will be one of the Nationalized stores from which the masses under "the One" will buy their food, clothing and household needs.  Wal Mart is updating it's image by adopting "green" thinking.  That and a few marketing touch ups and they are in business as the world's store.  "World Mart."

I look forward to discussing political viewpoints with those sophisticated...
