New BDC Website - Really!?

Hello,

Long time reader, 4th time poster....

What are your thoughts on the new Chronicle website?

Here are mine: Really!?  Really this is the "NEW" website? Seems like a major downgrade to me. Did they pick function over form? The style of this site is already outdated one minute after they created it. I'm sorry but this site is just horrible. Safe to say I am not a fan.  Anyone else?

I completely agree. What's with all the gray space on the sides? Everything is compacted and difficult to access. Awful, simply awful.
RE: Agreed bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I suppose I should mention this too because I think some of you who use this site also comment regularly on the Chronicle site. In theory, your logins for the old site's commenting system should work just fine on the new system.

In theory.

Check it out if you haven't already. Worst case: Yours doesn't work and you have to create a new account to comment on BDC articles.
this is a required field of hopeless dreams byRightOn4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Colors are better than white. Very cool.

Font is way too small in classifieds, and making people scroll down is worse than before, where all the headings were up top. And the front page is worse, since you can't see all the main story headings without scrolling down. Perhaps featured stories could have higher priority than your paper's laughable Twit(ter) status?

Good idea, but it has a long way to go. I'm saying this so it'll get somewhat fixed and be easier for me. Sorry, there's still no hope for you paper...carry on!
RE: this is a required field of hopeless dreams bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
The classifieds pages have been a continuous source of problems for us. Hopefully, we'll get them fixed by the end of the week.

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about our Twitter feed? How could we improve it?
RE: this is a required field of hopeless dreams byRightOn4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I don't know, I never have read any of your twitter feeds, just thought other things like featured stories are more desirable to see than the Twitter button, hence, placed higher.

There are enough people here that could help you with the Chronicle's homepage, but you'd actually have to listen to us and do a lot of the stuff we say. It really doesn't matter what you think, it's what the readers want to see. Anyway, not being mean, best of luck getting more bugs ironed.

... they have put the letters to the editor from the opinion page online. Woot! That was the only thing I missed about my Chronicle subscription.

I think the narrower appearance may be a concession to people who are viewing the web on their iPhones, mini lapbooks, etc.
RE: Finally ... byRightof Left4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I really missed the letters, 2nd best thing in the BDC next to the police report.

As for font size, with my browser all you have to do is hold down the Ctrl key and spin the scroll wheel and voila, larger font.
RE: Finally ... bymbecker4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
The new site is essentially the same width as the old one. The difference is something like 30 pixels.

As for displaying on mobile phones, we theoretically should have a new "mobile friendly" layout. Sadly, this is broken right now. We're working on it.

Thanks for all the feedback. As you can see, there are a lot of bugs to work out. This is exactly why we haven't publicized the site's launch in the print newspaper yet. Keep the comments coming.

"something like 30 pixels"? good god man, that's like 2.34% of the (current) average screen width! you should've consulted every single person on this site before changing that dimension. now my 1680x1050 desktop feels so much more barren. and with all the extra white-space, it makes me feel like winter may never end.[/sarcasm]

p.s., i've got a site i work on (didn't create, i swear) that pulls 1200 errors in 350 lines of HTML, so allow me to call myself out on validation issues as well. and also, general thanks for the upgrade/update, i can tell it's been thought-out and i feel y'all are moving in a good direction with it. rock, and good luck. hope it doesn't keep you there past 5pm :)
RE: Finally ... bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I said in a previous post that we should "theoretically" have a mobile-friendly site. It turns out that we actually got it working today! It's not too shabby.

If you're on an iPod Touch/iPhone or cell phone, it's at http://m.bozemandailychronicle.com/mobile. Your mobile browser *should* go to it automatically.
129 Errors.... byxfile10694 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
i'll let the W3C Validator tool speak on my behalf:

Markup Validation: http://bozemandailychronicle.com/

Aside from the fact that the developers didn't spend the time to deal with the ever-problematic ampersands in their javascript & elsewhere, i think they're on the right track. cleaner, a bit more focused layout... haven't dove deep into it. we'll see. almost any change whatsoever from the old site is going to be an improvement.
RE: 129 Errors.... bymbecker4 months ago (4 votes) (report abuse)
Yeah, that validation page makes me sad. The only comment I'll make is that we got it from our vendor that way. That's no excuse, I know, but it's an explanation.

It's certainly not perfect, and I doubt it ever will be, but we're trying to squash as many bugs as we can as quick as we can.
RE: 129 Errors.... byxfile10694 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
big 10-4 on that. another site i worked on was one of those quickbooks/intuit pre-built sites. holy mother of god. every tag came capitalized, every ampersand was unescaped, anything they could possibly blow, they did. i finally settled around 40 errors or so, cracked a beer, and called myself a god for getting it down to even *that* level.
sheesh byChicken Dena4 months ago (4 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
It's not that bad.
Columns bymntnbnd4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
The things I don't like about the new website are the spaces on the sides (the gray area), which is very large on my computer, and how large the ads are on the right side. This layout causes all the stories to be in a tight column running all the way down the page, so we have to scroll down a lot in order to read anything. It would be nicer if it could have the stories like msnbc.com has them--in groups according to local, state, etc. which don't require a ton of scrolling.
RE: Columns bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
The pages on the Web site are laid out according to a 960-pixel-wide grid, which is fairly standard for Web page design these days.

As for the organization of the homepage, I'll admit, it's not ideal for presenting news, but it's also fluid. That means we can change the layout when we need to. I'll add your suggestions to my list and see if we can possibly make some adjustments.

Thanks for the feedback!
Much better byMongo4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I like it and how long will we be able to read letters to the editor. Will that go away like it did on the last website? I hope not.

Fewer distractions easier to focus. Gold star from me, keep up the good work.
RE: Much better bymbecker3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Well, we don't have any plans to take the letters off the site this time. That said, plans can change. We're currently talking with our corporate owners about how much content we should be putting online for free. If they decide to limit how much we put online, we'll have to do it.

For the foreseeable future, things on the new Web site will keep as they are or improve, rather than shrink.

I'm pretty sure your net traffic will drop like a rock, along with ad revenue, if the BDC limits access.
new website byfrenchblu524 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I am out of work at the moment, and rely on the classified pages online every day. I hate the new one. The old one was quick, easy, and all on one page. Now you have to go through 2 pages. I think it's a back step for the echronicle.
Query bycwrite4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
It looks like the BDC is phasing out
the Bozemantalks.com website. There
is no link to it on the toolbar at the
top of the home page now. The comments
here are dropping off. Is this the
intent? Looks like Facebook
and Twitter are the new Bozeman Talks venue.
RE: Query bybozemantalker4 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse)
???
Bozeman Talks DOES indeed have a link on the BDC homepage. When you overlook things this easy to discover does it make you scratch your head and wonder what else you might be missing?
RE: Query bygixa4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
The link to BozemanTalks is on the pull-down menu under ”COMMUNITY” on the top navigation bar, cwrite.
RE: Query bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
There's also a banner linking to BozemanTalks in the right-hand sidebar of the site.
> bybozemantalker4 months ago (4 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
In the online poll area I have not been able to see the results since the revamp. It reads something like "no data for the selected period." Is that a kink to be worked out or am I missing something?
RE: > bygixa4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I've noticed this, too. Kinda takes the fun out of voting, doesn't it?
RE: > bymbecker4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
So here's the deal on the polls: They were working perfectly fine after we launched, but sometime between then and now, something odd has happened. It's on our bug list, and we'll get them fixed as soon as possible.

The polling system is still counting the votes. It's just not displaying the results for some reason.
RE: > bygixa4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Thanks, Mr. Becker. Looking forward to the polls being de-bugged.

I like it that the polls now show up in the drop down list under OPINION and that we can (theoretically) have access to previous poll results.
Expectations bycwrite4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
So why is the Bozemantalks.com link under
"community" instead of
"opinion"? Should be
under both.
RE: Expectations bymbecker3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
When we were doing the redesign, we talked about where to put the link to BT. We eventually settled on keeping it on the community menu because it's a separate site from the Chronicle site, like our LEAP site and Contests site.

I know we could easily have it in both places, but we decided not to duplicate in this case.
Just noticed that the polls section is now working on the BDC site bygixa3 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Congratulations! The graphics are much improved and the animation on the pie charts is very nice. Good job.
RE: Just noticed that the polls section is now working on the BDC site bymbecker3 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Thanks, we just completed a nice little upgrade on the software that runs the site. It ironed out a few more bugs and fixed the polls. Yay!
