| Was there someone to blame the Haiti quake on? How about the tsunami a few years ago? Hurricanes Katrina and Rita? I don't think anyone is to blame for natural disasters, nor does the earth "endure" natural disasters. Natural disasters are a result of the earth just doing what it does. | |

| cwrite: If all the disasters are God's way of getting our attention, I think he/she is prefectly capable of sending e mail or prempting the Olympics on TV. I think this could be the results of an overtaxed planet. But I don't follow the notion that God is trying to get our attention by taking lives he/she has created. If this were the case I might go to church to pray for God. | |

ever hear of them? Ever wonder how they were formed? Wouldn't say it has anything to do with a divine message. I could not say this better, so here is an awesome explanation... From http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2002-02/1014052730.Es.r The plates whose collision is uplifting the Andes Mountains are the South American plate and the Nazca plate. The Nazca plate extends eastwards from the East Pacific Rise, a constructive plate boundary at which new ocean floor is being formed. The Nazca plate is moving eastwards from the East Pacific Rise. The South American plate is moving westward from the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Where these two plates meet the Nazca plate is being subducted beneath the South American plate. The Andes Mountains lie above the subduction zone. The subducting slab is heated by friction and by the hot mantle into which it is descending. This heating causes partial melting of the slab and the overlying mantle, generating magma that rises into the crust. Most of the magma cools and solidifies in the lower crust, adding to its volume – a process known as underplating. Some of it rises into the upper part of the crust and may erupt to form the volcanoes of the Andes range. The high heat flow above the subducting slab also reduces the density of the crust, causing the crust to become isostatically buoyant. All the signs are there. Is Chile being punished like Pat Robertson said Haiti was? How do earthquakes determine who is being "punished" and why? IMHO, it is all in plate tectonics, as in the above posts. In other words..."stuff" happens. |
