Charity Dance Event at the Ellen Theatre Friday Sept. 25th

On Friday, September the 25th at the Ellen Theatre, Serpents Shimmy will be presenting a performance by LillySerpentine Fusion Bellydance.  We will be holding this event in order to raise both money and awareness for several local non-profit organizations including The Network (formerly known as the Battered Womens Shelter), ROC (Reach Out & Care) Wheels, Siamsa Irish Dance Troupe, Bozeman Bike Kitchen, and 1001 Petals.  Each of the charities will be present to talk about what they contribute to the community.

In addition to the performance, we will also be hosting both a beginner and an advanced learn-to-dance Dance class taught by Zanbaka.  A Silent auction of local arts, products and services will be held during the performance.  Photography opportunities with the Dancers will be available as well.  100% of what we make on tickets and all of the above events will be distributed to the attending charities.

It's hard for charities right now in the current economic turmoil, so please come, have a good time, and support your local community.  Tickets are available at theellentheatre.com.  More information on the show is available at lillyserpentine.com

We're still looking for sponsorship for this show, so if you'd like the opportunity to invest in this event, we offer advertisement benefits, as well as performance opportunities for contributors.  If you are interested in sponsorship, please send me an email: kc@theaudioartisans.com

Of each ticket actually goes to these charities?

Ed - it appears to totally support local orgs. I wouldn't sweat the admin. costs on something like this.
RE: How much byEd.11 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Thank you, Danie. I am skeptical of any operation such as this. I've seen admin. costs include everything from bldg. rent to $30k director's salary and the charities getting to split $425.00. The "charity" 1001 Petals appears to be a local belly dance group. I am uncertain as to how this or an Irish dance group qualifies as a charity.

Ed, I appreciate that you are skeptical. There are often a lot of shams and hidden costs in events. It's good to ask the questions. Serpents Shimmy attempts to be a transparent organization, and I'd be more than happy to address anything that you feel may be out of order.

Tickets are $15. $2 of that goes to the Ellen for using their online ticket sales, the rest goes to the charities. As far as administrative costs, all the money for show operation is being raised externally. Nothing of what we make on the day of the event will actually be used to pay for the event. None of the people putting this on are paid salaries or expect to make anything on this show.

Concerning the Non-profits, the Irish Dance troupe is actually a non-profit, as it's a dance organization for kids. Concerning 1001 Petals, the head of that is actually a dancer, however, 1001 petals is not a bellydance group. It's a non-profit group that is trying to promote emotional and physical health through movement (ie. dance, including but not limited to bellydance). If you have further question concerning the viability ore legitimacy of the non-profits, I encourage you to attend the event, and ask them in person. Alternately, I could put you in touch with any of them and you could ask them.

The group promoting this: Serpents Shimmy is a registered 501 3C Non-Profit.

Charities, non profits, and good causes byArt11 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
First of all I also wish you well and hope the event goes well, AudioArtisans. But I would like to question as Ed did or started to, on why the organizations are called charities. Are they good causes? I have no doubt. Non-profits? Again, no doubt. But are charities and good causes one and the same? On that, I'm not sure but they don't exactly seem to be the same. Are charities and non-profits the same? To that one I'd argue no. Yet you have used those to refer to the same organizations. Again, wish you well, but I am curious.
I'm also curious if you should know on why the "Network" changed their name to that. Any time I've ever read anything about the organization it's always mentioned what it used to be called so that people know what it is. Shouldn't they have left it as it was?

Sweet Pea is non-profit.

Good post, Art. Apparently, they want to include more than battered women.

Thank you for your well-wishes. I appreciate them. You are correct, Charities may be Non-Profits, but Non-Profits may not necessarily be charities. My verbage is in error. Thank you for the clarification, and I stand corrected.

A little bit of background...1) This is the first year that we've done a production like this on this level. We hope to do this every year, so any constructive critiques will be noted and discussed for next year's event. 2) Serpent's Shimmy, being associated with and started by dancers are inherently sympathetic to Dancers, and the difficulty to get funding for their particular art. However, our mission statement is "Involving the community in raising awareness and support through dance". Basically we provide the means and a main attraction for a fund raising event. We are passionate about local non-profits, and to help them to present themselves to the community. 3) Despite the economy, I was personally a bit surprised at the amount of difficulty in getting non-profits to sign up for an event like this. Luckily I have made several very good contacts this time around, and next year I believe that we'll have a much more well rounded selection of Charities (Yes Charities, not non-profits).

Concerning the Network, It's full name is "The Network Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse". I can't truly speak for this organization, but I believe that they're encompassing a few other services to better help people out, so the name was perhaps a bit more restrictive of what they do. Again, I can't fully speak for them, and I encourage you to come to the show, or contact them independently and ask them personally, so there is no "information filter" in the middle.
Network Supporter bynonprofit10 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I stumbled across this feedback and am delighted to provide information about the organization, The Network. We are a local nonprofit that offers many services including emergency shelter, crisis intervention, ongoing support, referrals, and education. These services are offered to men, women and children in our community (and sometimes from out of state).

We began as a shelter in 1979 and have expanded our services, so much so that we needed a new name! The name was changed to The Network Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse in 2001. Since that time, we have constantly struggled with the community not knowing who we are, therefore we throw in the "shelter" language.

This year we are extrememly excited to reveal a new name for our organization, one that won't have to be followed by "shelter". The name revealing party will be sometime within the next few months, it will be advertised on our site
www.thenetworkmt.org.

We immensely appreciate events like this, and organizations who are so willing to help us out. Any amount of money is great, and we are proud to be in such a giving community.

Thank you, and we hope to see you there!
