"Below the Viewing Threshold"

Just exactly what is the definition of "viewing threshold?"

And who decides where a post lies.  How do the viewers feel about this?

It looks like old-fashioned censorship.  There've certainly been alot of posts with

foul/obscene language in them that  should've been censored.  Do you agree or disagree.

Who is the Editor-in-charge?  Let's hear from them.  What's their criteria?

when enough people click "report abuse" on a given post. I don't know how many clicks it takes, but "the viewers" are the ones driving it. The threshold is probably set in the general admin functions for the whole site. I highly doubt the admins are actively monitoring and censoring everything we type here.

I have to mention I find it amusing that you are complaining about something seeming old-fashioned.
probability of a solution...unlikely byRightOn11 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Just follow your nose to who runs this travesty of a forum. They can't proofread their articles and they are blatantly biased towards the far left.

Am I surprised my comments get censored more than any others? Not really, since it comes with the territory of sharing the truth when others are afraid to hear it. But yes, isn't it ironic that the inappropriate language from our socially challenged brethren stands to foul our comments? They call me names, but I won't retaliate.

Interesting questions, cwrite. bygixa11 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I don't have much of a problem with language but I realize some do. While I don't object to certain words in conversation (especially if they make a point), I try to express myself on the internet with some restraint out of consideration for others.

RE: “Who is the Editor-in-charge? Let's here from them. What's their criteria?”

Aren't the criteria cited — albeit somewhat vaguely — in the User Agreement under the heading of “Online Conduct”?

I've been wondering if Pooterman is still administrating this site. He used to give us explanations sometimes and occasionally joined in on some of the discussions but I haven't noticed much of that lately.

PS— I agree with southward that the viewers are the ones driving it and no one is monitoring our discussions here for the purpose of censoring them.

Awwww, who messed up our little experiment by giving a star?
RE: I agree with southward that the viewers are the ones driving it and no one is monitoring our discussions here for the purpose of censoring them. byRightof Left11 months ago (4 votes) (report abuse)
Well, seems the experiment shows that it is the viewers who are reporting abuse that cause a post to become BTVT

Thanks for all that reported me for abuse.

Cheers! (if someone would be so kind as to award the post 5 starz, lets see what that does)

Now about these posts that are BTVT.

I have looked at them, in my opinion none of them constitute "Abuse". They are views and opinions. So some may feel they are in error? Man up (sorry about the gender specific demand ladies) and argue your point, but reporting them as abusive is Chicken$hit.
RE: I agree with southward that the viewers are the ones driving it and no one is monitoring our discussions here for the purpose of censoring them. bygixa11 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
So are you now asking for the stars to see if the positive star votes will somehow cancel the negative abuse votes and lift your comment out of BTVT-land? I doubt the system is that sophisticated but I'll give you 5 stars just to see what happens.

RE: “I have looked at them, in my opinion none of them constitute "Abuse". They are views and opinions. So some may feel they are in error?”

This is what I suspect, too, especially in light of some of the childishness we've seen with people adding negative tags here.

Interesting that someone would frequent an opinion/discussion website and not be able to take differing opinions.

[Edited to add:] Oh noes, it won't let me give you stars now, Rightof Left. It's telling me that I already voted. :(
Profanity and other 9 letter words byArt11 months ago (5 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
If used sparingly, profanity can sometimes enhance a point someone is trying to make. So on a rare occasion it might be appropriate. I don't know as I have ever felt I had to use it on a post on this forum. Maybe that time will come. But if I were to use such language I would wonder if perhaps I was just being too lazy in using the language. Because it can be a lazy way to draw people's attention rather than trying to articulate.
As far as RightOn's claim that this forum is moderated by someone biased toward the far left. All's I can say is that is not the view I have standing on the left side of the fence. Gosh darn it.
RE: Profanity and other 9 letter words byEd.11 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
Have to disagree, Art. I have always felt that the use of profanity in any discourse demonstrates:

1. Lack of education.
2. Lack of class.
3. Lack of respect for others.
4. Laziness.
5. Any combination of the above.

That said, what used to be classified as profanity is sometimes considered the King's English today.

Who is Frank Zappa and what makes him a valid source?
RE: a byRightof Left11 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Who is Frank Zappa???????

Oh Ed.

Frank was a great American musician and composer. He died young (late 40s) from Prostate Cancer.

Don't be put off by his offbeat looks and lyrics, the guy was an amazing musician and sort of a philosopher. He did use a lot of what some would consider profanity. It is all in the eye of the beholder.
I get it bycwrite11 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Know what?
I've never pushed the
report abuse button on
any post! It looks like a
way to censor a post that
hits home and makes some
uncomfortable. (There's no
one to report the abuse to.)
It operates more like peer
pressure and exclusion as in
let's just chase away the people
we don't like or who say things
we don't agree with. It's a sort
of pecking order thing. "This is our
post and we won't let you in."
Reminds me of kindergarten.

RE: RightOn byRightOn11 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
This travesty of a web forum is so poorly thought out, I can't. Don't think I didn't just go to my profile and try, though. 5 stars you get.
RE: RightOn byRightof Left11 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
Right ON! RightOn.... good to see you demonstrate some sense of humor. 5 Starz for you as well.

I want to change my name to LooCzar but I can't either.
RE: RightOn byRightOn11 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
I don't recall either demonstrating humor or asking your opinion, but if you want to be "Leader of the Toilet", then by all means, young pupil, establish residence. 1 star for lack of creativity.

I liked "Pope of the Dump" best.
Anyone want that job?
down with censorship bytiredofbeingjudged11 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
i don't agree with the censorship on here at all.
not just the 'below viewing threshold' but also when they delete entire posts. the only exception i could see justified is spam. i do like the stars because it lets people know you agree (or disagree) without having to leave endless 'i like what you said' or 'i dont think what you said was appropriate' replies.
and yes i have given the 1 star treatment and clicked report abuse. pretty much only when someone uses name calling of any sort -i dont think that has any place in civilized dialogue. oh, and spam too :P~
(and lol @ 'old-fashioned')
my reply byPooterman11 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I am not sure what triggers it exactly. I can say it is not me and when I see them I "proof" them and then approve them. I will attempt to get a better answer for you soon.

Sorry.

Pooterman,

Could it be that when a reply recieves a certain number of postings that in the interest of making the act of scrolling much more convienient there is a set threshold in which the postings are collapsed?

Maybe there really are censors
around as in WWII when
sections of people's mail was cut out
to keep Govt top secrets from
being exposed/revealed.
Just smiling as I read on... bysproutslilsis11 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Does anyone believe in spelling and/or grammar anymore? As I read the posted discussions and comments, I am amused by the "smushed together" words and abbreviations! Does it really take that much time to actually spell-out the whole word? I know we live in a texting society, and I can get lol, lmao, etc. But on a discussion forum, wouldn't we look a little more proficient if we could/would spell out the words, capitalize letters, and use punctuation? Just observing...

RE: “But on a discussion forum, wouldn't we look a little more proficient if we could/would spell out the words, capitalize letters, and use punctuation?”

Indeed we would, sproutslilsis. As one who has been obsessed with language, spelling, and typography since the age of twelve, I'm practically hard-wired to always notice how folks express themselves in writing. (I've come to realize it's my own special corner of nerd-dom*, though, shared by only a few.)

Although there are many adept writers on this forum, I just don't think formal English is in the nature of the web — where immediacy and making one's point seem to be more important.

Having accidentally made more grammar mistakes in web comments myself than I care to think about, I try to pretty much read internet postings for meaning only.
