yay for fireworks?

people love their fireworks. it's almost anti-american to state the belief that regular folks shouldn't be allowed to buy them - even if there are decent reasons behind such beliefs. my issue with them is that they're messy, sometimes dangerous, and it's a lot of money that people are lighting on fire.

just wondering what others think about this, though - should access to fireworks be limited? should fireworks be laden with some sort of tax that might fund clean-up or safety measures? what about further restricting the window of days that people can set them off?

or do you think that things are already too restricted, and that we should be more free here to sell & blow fireworks off wherever & whenever we want?

as much as it bugs me to have to deal with the noise for nearly a full week before and after the 4th, i don't think i have any right to tell people what to do with their money or time. the law says they can do it, and that's where it stands. but when you consider possible figures for $$ spent just here in Gallatin on fireworks - $500K? whatever the number is, there's a lot of better things that could be done with that cash, as opposed to sticking a fuse into it and lighting it up. a middle ground would be best, in my opinion - where people match their fireworks expenditures with contributions towards charities or schools, etc.

It's ironic to me that we spend our independence day supporting trade with communist China...

Here, here, ellofoto! I totally agree.
RE: Communism! byberrymountain1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
The Chinese produce the majority of our fireworks, Fisher Price Toys (with lead), check out manhy of the products at Murdoch's that we all buy in the clothing/boots/belts department, they're from CHINA too. The Chinese make the pots we buy from Cashman Nursery (a man who spouts off hippocritically that we should buy local, yet he buy pots from China to sell to us), and every day our nation owes them millions more.

This post was about the mess/litter/debris fireworks create, and walkerbozemanranger wanting to place a tax on fireworks.

Do a post on China, will yah!
RE: Communism! byskew1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
We fought a war for independence from the most powerful nation on earth for (among other reasons) the right of individual businesses to trade with whomever they want, at low or non existent tariffs, instead of being forced to trade exclusively with merry old England.

There is no irony here. American business engaging in trade with places like China is why Americans in the 18th century risked their entire fortunes and / or died.

Is anybody in this forum smarter than a 5th grader? Do we all need to go back to civics class?
RE: Communism! byWalkerBozemanRanger1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
berry i didn't say i wanted to place a tax on fireworks, i offered it up as an idea for people to respond to because i was interested in hearing other opinions on the topic.

maybe you skipped over my line that said "i don't think i have any right to tell people what to do with their money or time".

or this one: "just wondering what others think about this, though".

or this one: "a middle ground would be best, in my opinion - where people match their fireworks expenditures with contributions towards charities or schools, etc."

nowhere in the post do i assert that these taxes SHOULD be imposed. as close to that as i got was saying that people should match what they spend on fireworks with charitable contributions. never did i go so far as to say that people should be forced to do this. contributions are voluntary, otherwise they're not really a contribution, are they?

Great just what we need more 'laws' that take away our freedom. I personally hate fireworks but I dont care if people want to buy them and use them whenever they want. They work hard for their money and they can spend it how they see fit. You are right, you have no right telling people what to do with their money and time!

We hold these truths to be self evident... byskew1 month ago (5 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
...that we have certain inalienable rights, such as the pursuit of happiness. You may pass laws restricting where I can light my fireworks. You can pass laws restricting the size of my fireworks. You can pass laws resticting the noise of my fireworks.

But don't EVER tell me or anybody else how they should spend their money, or institute a 100% tax so you can spend my money where you or some committee sees fit. We declared war on the most powerful nation on earth over issues like excessive taxation and pursuit of our own personal happiness. And we won. And we celebrate these freedoms on July 4th.

As a dog owner I hate fireworks. I've had 4 dogs and none of them handled them well. The present one included.
Having said that, if it's felt that we have a right to or at least should be able to buy them, then I want to be able to buy bottle rockets.
RE: Fireworks byWalkerBozemanRanger1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
can't buy bottle rockets here? if that's the case, i say that's a pretty silly rule, in light of all the other dangerous exploding things that ARE legally able to be purchased here.
"The Star Spangled Banner" ring a bell WALKERBOZEMANRANGER? byberrymountain1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Who are you? We KNOW you already use at least 2/TWO screen names.

Do you have any idea why Americans enjoy fireworks? Because it is an AMERICAN TRADITION. Have you ever heard of the song, "The Star Spangled Banner?"

You want to TAX fireworks? Why stop there? How about adding a tax onto any purchase of the American Flag? I have seen many (those that are actually "flown" in honor of our nation) in very tattered condition. My gosh!

The "mess" bothers you, aye? How many local clean-ups have you particpated in? Doesn't sound like you're from Bozeman, that's for certain. That's where you walk up and down roads, and pick up the garbage other people have discarded. Mostly beer cans/bottles, dirty diapers, food cans, misc. paper, tires, and even dead animals. I doubt you've gotten your hands dirty "walkerbozemanranger."

No, I don't believe I have ever picked up "fireworks" debris, when participating in a clean-up.

Most people set off fireworks on their own property. That means they clean it up. Or, if they're slobs they don't. Also, if you read the paper, there are already city rules regarding the dates/hours. These ridiculous regulations also state that these fireworks can only reach 15' off the ground. Try to find one that fits that description.

Your statement of TAXING FIREWORKS is probably one of the most, if not the most UNAMERICAN STATEMENT I have heard. It ties for #1 with people who want to disarm Americans.

You want to tax the people, for celebrating their country, the greatest country on earht;

The "United States of America"

Since the Chinese make most all the fireworks in the world,
they must be laughing all the way to the bank.
People who have trouble paying $4+/gal for gas don't seem to have any trouble
buying something that they will set on fire & burn up fast.
My neighbors don't seem to know the city regulations re: fireworks use.
Why doesn't anyone clean up the street the day after?
Do these people really know what it is they are supposed to be celebrating?
I wear earplugs to bed! Do they make earplugs for dogs?
china byDrogoscg1 month ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
its a good thing China is getting richer. The richer they get moves them more towards the modern world. The richer China has become, the more rights the Chinese people have demanded and gotten. To keep China an impoverished nation makes it stay backwards and archaic.

How did the middle class of Europe overcome the noble class? They did it thru the power of economic gain. Let China become richer and totalitarian rule will taste more bitter to the common Chinese citizen.
Questions byuptown1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
In answer to questions. 3 of the dogs died. Of old age. But fireworks may have made them age.
And no, you can't get bottle rockets in Montana though someone told me you can or reservation land. I'm told it's because they create a greater fire danger.
But I really think it's because those who decide such things want me to move elsewhere so that I can buy them.

darn tootin.

$1.682 Trillion dollars is china's estimated foreign reserve holding of US currency. (minus gold) citation

-- [edited] --
additional point is that the entire US economy is worth about $15 trillion (2007 est). that means that china has almost 15% of our country's annual net worth just chilling in their vaults. if they decided to dump that money - whoa - you wanna see $250 for a barrel of oil - make china mad and see what happens... eeek.

First you are all about taking rights and restricting this and that but then you turn around and are all don't restrict that its a right this...what side you on? I really like ignorant people it makes me look so much smarter...however, like I said before go to MSU and take a history class...in fact just sit in the back and listen then when you make historical references you won't sound foolish....

OT: someone mentioned in another thread how rude some folks

*sheesh* Perhaps a class on civility is in order?
yeah i waffled on this one, but i'm happy with that. byWalkerBozemanRanger1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
BM: yes i am bothered by noise, made by people blowing off fireworks at ridiculous hours of the night/morning. i don't give a darn how people want to celebrate our independence, it's up to them. but when it involves disturbing the peace, it's a whole different issue. furthermore, the city's rules are clear: july 3rd through the 5th, between 12pm and 12am (1am on the 4th).

by your logic, it would be acceptable to set off fireworks anywhere, and at anytime, as long as it's in the name of "American Citizens celebrating our country". That sounds fantastic - i personally think your mouth would be a good place to set off some large mortars.

and you're right, it doesn't sound like anyone else likes the tax idea. i'm content with that. i don't think it's such a great idea either, but i'm not afraid to take a shot and let people tell me my ideas are crap. heck, they're probably right!

but to skip over your obsession with my identity and whether or not i have another screen name - there are actually plenty of other products we routinely buy that include "ecotaxes" aimed at mitigating some impact from the production/disposal/use of said products - tires are one very specific example, what is it, $2/tire when you buy new ones? but the idea of ecotaxes goes much further than that, often covering minerals, lumber, electricity, gas, hunting/fishing license fees, etc... however, trying to fit a fireworks tax under that same framework is certainly a bit of a stretch. labelling the idea as "unamerican" though, is pretty silly, in light of the fact that we pay these sorts of taxes on many things we buy daily.

berry you continue to prove that you are incapable of writing a valid argument to support your beliefs, especially when you juxtapose our national anthem, fireworks, and american traditions (in your deleted comment). i say:

- slavery was an american tradition
- ben franklin romped with whores
- the slaughtering of native american "savages" was considered honorable at the time
- most americans thought that fighting a war in the phillipines and installing a puppet government in the early 1900's was a great idea

but just because a million (or 10 or 300 million) people think something is right, doesn't necessarily make it so. most people in china think that tibet is indeed a part of their homeland and that military crackdowns to control dissent there are justified. many other people disagree on both points.

so who is "right"? that's your problem BM - you feel like you have to be "right", whereas i really don't care - i'm very glad to be wrong. often by proposing an idea that other people disagree with, someone will point out a better idea that i hadn't considered.

and you berry, all you can do is pick apart uptown's comment about his/her dogs -
"You say you have HAD 4 DOGS. Where did they go? You did not say you HAVE 4 dogs." (from another deleted comment of yours)

BerryMountain - you are a force for the negative. your words are condescending and insulting and blatantly rooted in ignorance.
yea for fireworks! by34ksmom1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
As a first time fireworks stand worker, I can attest to the fact that above all we forget that fireworks are fun! I have heard it all, from friends who said that we were taking money from people who couldn't afford it to the people who came and spent hundreds of dollers. I would like to think that at the end of the day what is remembered is .. watermelon, friends, hot days, and the sulpher smell of smoke bombs. I have wonderful memories of corn on the cob, and hamburgers, ice cream and sparklers. Also I do know that they are totally useless and a waste of money ( we do not need them!), they disrupt pets and sleep patterns. I do think it is possible to do them responsibly. We do about
$2000 worth every year. Each year we take the time to invite our neighbors over and worn them that we will be doing them. This helps with the horses and dogs that don't like them. At least they have options. anyway thanks for letting me vent. The fourth is a great holiday at our house, and our friends call and ask if they can come... so it can't be all bad.

mr poot: i notice that admin has removed a number of comments on here, including berry's comment about uptown's late dogs, as well as her comment that lighting off fireworks is an american tradition. as well as the comment where i called her a b****. the last one was uncalled for and added nothing to the conversation (and really exposed me as the fool i truly am, so thanks for covering me) - but berry's two comments are cited later in the thread (by me and others), and they do give insight into her approach towards this topic. without them present anymore - well my comments later lose some of their meaning and look a bit out of place. i'm just sayin... me calling someone a b**** is out-of-line and has no place in here, but her comments weren't out-of-line, they did indeed represent her opinion. can they come back?
