I appreciated the factual information Bryson delivered in his speech. His "delivery" was little more than grandstanding, and he knew it. He may as well have said, "You people are horrible for having concerns about recovering addicts in your neighborhood!" Seemed to me, he was ripping everyone a new one and working like heck, to come out smelling like the authoritative god he wishes he was, and may actually think he is. I was also surprised by the body language and actions, of the mayor and commissioners, while Bryson was giving his speech. Not a ONE of these people, had the integrity to sit upright, and simply listen respectfully, to whatever he had to say. At one point, commissioner (?who?) said in a hushed but loud enough tone so everyone could hear, "calm down." So, more grandstanding. What the heck? Mayor Kaaren Jacobson really put on the best performance of all...leaving her seat, and calling 911. I guess she felt threatened? huh??? Mayor Kaaren pointed out that for those who speak out of order, jail time and or a monetary fine for such an "offense" is a real possibility. What really happened here is that Mayor Kaaren Jacobson found she was not in C O N T R O L of Bryson or anyone else, so she stomped off to call the police! Now, she was in control. Back to the subject... We all have friends or family, who have had addiction problems. We don't throw people away like garbage, do we? It took Betty Ford for American's to say the word "alcholism," and that wasn't so long ago. |

| Our commissioners or other public servants should not berate constituents directly or through condescending speech intended to incite anger or frustration. Bryson was poking and prodding at a group of people with opinions different than his own with the intent to anger them and the rest of the commissioners were waiting and watching for the show to follow. It worked and those being mocked publicly finally couldn't listen to his excessively long and sarcastic speech anymore. He acted like a juvenile and I would have walked out on him too. Jacobson showed that she will use laws and her position to take care of people that don't agree with her. She let Bryson poke and prod at a group of people that should have been shown respect. A reasonable person would determine that all of the commissioners could have predicted that Bryson's speech would eventually result in a breakdown in order. They all should have known better and they acted like fools when they didn't intervene at some point to ensure order and respect. We know that there are laws on the books for a variety of reasons, but the intent of the them is not to punish someone after you berate them in public to the point that they snap and then use the law to show your control. I don't think that Jacobson was necessarily wrong for calling at the point that she did, but her comments reveal much about how she perceives herself above the constituents. I don't think that she would have been calling the police, making the comments she did, or promoting the bad environment if she was friends with the group of people that she decided to turn over to the police. I don't think that Bryson is actually a moron; I agree with his position on many things, but he certainly acted like a moron and showed his lack of maturity. Very disappointing to see. I'm not sure what the entire debate included, but I feel sympathy for the people he was mocking in any event. | ||

While I think the mayor went overboard (as usual), I think Bryson was right on the money with his comments. Those folks in opposition should be ashamed of their behavior in the meeting. Those in recovery who have made it to the "halfway house" stage deserve a chance. Either support the halfway house no matter where it is located, or change the laws so the recovering addicts are kept in confinement if they pose such a risk. ...the same argument can be made for sex offenders as discussed in earlier posts. |

Danie06, Say...help me out so I can better understand your comment and beliefs regarding "sex offfenders" If a half-way house for sex offenders planned to move next door to your home (pretty sure you live rural), would you really be alright with this situation? I freely admit, I would not be alright with such a situation. Nope, wouldn't feel comfortable about sending out little "Johnny or Mary" to play without supervision 100% of the time, with a home full of convicted sex offenders living next door or down the block. So, I guess that makes me a, a double s. I don't believe the two are comparable in any way. The statistics are solid regarding sex offender's and repeat behavior. (I'm not talking about some 18 year old boy who was prosecuted for having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend) However, I have no problem with a half-way house for substance abusers in my neighborhood, or next door to my home. My concern would be if the house/home/residence was presented as a commerical business (say with a sign that indicated it was a "facility"), rather than a residence. This would impact residential property values as any appraisor can confirm. Commercial properties of any type typically affect the value of bordering residential properties. This has nothing to do with what the business/facility is. Just a fact. I don't think the concerns of area resident's were acknowledged or answered at the meeting as they should have been. I believe these citizens were berated for their concerns. Bryson's passion to help these people, got the best of him and his anger lashed out. He was out of control, though I don't believe he realized it at the time.(I don't like him one bit, and question his character.) If the Mayor of Bozeman, and City Commissioners had any integrity at all, they would hold/request another meeting specifically for the resident's in the area, and attempt to answer their questions, and help them to understand more about the people who will be using the half-way house. Bryson has the knowledge to educate people. What Bryson is missing in his own psyche, is empathy. Yet, "empathy" is what he accuses others of not having. |

My husband and I volunteer with a program called "Celebrate Recovery." This is a scripture-based 12 step program. We meet in our church, which is located in a residential area. We minister to homeless, alcoholics, addicts and broken people. The biggest thing we have learned from this program is that none of us are perfect, and everyone deserves a chance. We have learned more about love and forgiveness than we could ever hope to get from any sermon. These people are grateful to be liberated from the chains of addiction and are extremely appreciative of any little thing we do for them. Maybe that's the secret-a little love and acceptance. Not trying to be preachy-only pointing out that there is brokenness in all of us in some form or other and we should leave our comfort zone and lift each other up. Bozeman's NIMBY strikes again. |

Egotistical, Elitist, Self-righteous, hot headed, narcicistic, spoiled brat. That's all I could think of when I watched this. The position Bryson is in is to serve the people, and not be self serving, he should resign or have his Commisionership stripped away. Let's call a vote on that! |

Yea, Yea, yea, Eric Bryson had some good points, but he needs to understand that he is a public servant not a public monarch and should show at least some concern for the wishes of the community. If the community doesn't want the facility in their midst, then so be it. Its the publics money, and should be the publics wishes, put it up for vote. Also the mayor is an idiot, and shouldn't have called the cops, it was justifiable anger. People were mad because the commissioners were once again disregarding the wishes of the community with their "I know so much more than you lowly serfs" attitude. The fact she called the cops makes me laugh and simple point to my article and strengthen my opinion of the work load the police have. Finally, his point about all the police calls, well lets just say I have read the police reports and you could probably knock out 4/5 of the calls as retarded, or non essential. If people call the cops over dead rats the 2,000 calls from S. Church road is easy dismissed in my mind...In fact lets call it an abundant supply of rodents on S. Church Road.... |

Why didn't Bryson "GO OFF" on "THE MAYOR" when she CALLED 911?

Bryson went off on a "tirade," which was directed at the taxpayers/property owners who are concerned about the safety of their neighborhood in regard to the half-way home. Yet, Bryson didn't feel the need to "go off" on the MAYOR when she made the ridiculous, to 911! Mayor Jacoboson could only justify such immature, childish behavior by blaming property owners and making an accusation that she FELT THREATENED by their verbal concerns. The MAYOR Jacobson and COMMISSIONER BRYSON are the biggest FAKES Montana has possibly seen! Jacobson and Bryson you are an embarassment to Bozeman, and your acting skills are truly pathetic. You fooled no one. I hope everyone who views Bryson's chastizing "tirade," along with the pathetic mayor's theatrics, should email the link to every person they know who votes, or could vote in Bozeman. Shockingly embarassing. One gives a condascending speech directed at concerned taxpayers...the other calls the police/911 on the taxpayers for opening their mouths. |

For those of you who pay taxes to the City of Belgrade you shouldn't be laughing at all. Many of the elected and city officials/employees are from Butte, MT and certainly not natives. If you wanted to improve your town, wouldn't you look to people who have "proven experience?" |
