Bozeman Wetlands Preserve

FYI to anyone who might be interested. Due to lack of action from the city and lack of interest, Delaney and company have killed the beavers and and are clearing the culverts at the hoped for Bozeman Wetland Preserve to make way for his next development. Seems like a real shame for the city to lose this opportunity.

I didn't even know there was a wetlands preserve in Bozeman. I am still learning this area.

Can you elaborate on where it is and where you got your information on the development?
West of the Main Street exit. . . bysouthward2 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
and North of main street. Beyond the "village downtown" off Broadway ave. It isn't preserved as far as I know, but some people have been pursuing that goal vs planned subdivisions or something. The paper has been covering the back and forth between the two groups. It is a shame to lose this bit of connectivity through Bozeman for birds, bears, beaver etc. But at the same time, lack of interest is lack of interest. That area has been neglected forever and now there is the idea that "something must be done." I guess that approach worked for fixing up Soroptomist (sp?) Park, so maybe it will work again.
Lack of Interest...Seems to be the "norm" with any level of corruption and power in this city/town. byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I am finding out quite fast, that there are few people in this state, county and town who care much about anything, at least enough to actually "act" on their concerns. I am also guilty. But I think that has to do with power in numbers. One is a lonely number...

I propose (yes, I expect someone to lash out at me how stupid I am, but I am sincere...)citizens of Bozeman and the county form a group, which would "act" responsibly with a coordinated effort regarding issues like this one. Show up as a organized group for these meetings and show up in numbers, with some individuals who excell in the art of public speaking. Meeting: (City Council, Gallatin County Commissioner, even state level)

I believe it would be the best thing for such a group to set aside any business connections, or party connections, in fact any connections at all to whatever concern is the focus.

Had there been a coordinated group effort regarding this habitat to call "Delaney" for what he is, and what he does to our area, I believe there is a chance that people like "Delaney" could be stopped, or at least slowed down.

I think this is a perfect example, as I know of no one personally who would not be interested in preserving the habitat of animals Democrat or Republican. This specific concern is not what anyone could construe as being unreasonable.

So, if anyone is interested OR if there is such a group, then why don't we form a group. At least then such a group could march into these council meetings and give em' H e DOUBLE Hockey Stick. (Retirees, college students, moms, dads, singles, old, young, whoever, whatever...did I include everyone?)

Here's another issue/example. Gravel pits, yeah...we gotta' have em'. Why are we not showing up as groups to protest pits in areas which will harm current homeowners financially and possibly health wise also? It's not always about stopping the actions of some person or entity, offer alternatives.
You know, I'm not talking about "tree hugging," (though someone might want to do this!) but there are many issues most of us in the area would and could come together on.

Just no party lines, no politics period!
I think we all have alot more in common than we think.

Delaney owns this land doesn't he? Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
A landowner can pretty much do what they want with their property can't they?
The Hospital Foundation killed off all the beaver in the ravine/glen on their property to make way for their development scheme. It was done quietly before anyone realized what had happened. Delaney's property is on the north side of Main St. The Hospital property is on the south side of Main St. They are the same corridor. There is a push to develop every bit of available space near Bozeman to make it grow. When the water runs out, the development will stop.
Bozeman is close to capacity using it's available water supply from Hyalite Resevoir. I wish there were 'water police' but there aren't.
I'll go with that... byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
How long has Delaney owned this property? Who did he purchase it from?
RE: I'll go with that... bybozogirl2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Finding out who owns property from the comfort of your own home...
http://gis.mt.gov/ - click on Property Map and have fun!

This is based on who pays the taxes so on development property they are usually owned by business entities, but you can usually find out who owns what by doing a little digging :)

And then to find out who they bought it from, you can go to the court house and look all of that up.
Gallatin County Treasurer also has some information byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I am aware, that our tax information is available through the Gallatin County Treasurer online.

People like the "Delaney's" have quite a few records. I asked how long they had owned it, becvause a previous post indicated that one of our bloggers had quite a bit of information regarding the Delaneys and the ownership of this particular property.

I hoped for an answer. I am aware that I can go to the Court House and do research.

Here are the properties which I can locate in the Gallatin County Treasurer online record, which are owned or partially owned by the Delaney's:

heading to Belgrade, it's a real disappointment. Greedy developer's need to be challenged much more and pay higher impact fee's for this kind of disruption.
What a ruinous idiot!

I think you are thinking of Cherry River access. This is south of the highway as you would travel from 7th to east main exit. Just past where there used to be a billboard for Wall Drug.

Make sure you tag this "Delaney." Good to log this information, one way or another.

On a lighter note, the Delaney's have a beautiful home located at Story and Willson. I was just thinking...hmmm...they have a very large yard which is fenced. There is a beautiful reflection pool I think Beavers would love to make their home. Sounds like a perfect place for all these displaced animals. (I hope are still alive, but who knows)

On a serious note. This stuff goes on all the time around the country. I appreciate more than you know, the concern you feel for the animals. Without coordinated efforts, it will continue.

Post an idea. Politics left at home. Like that'd fly in Bozeman.

Thanks for all the comments. Interestingly, Delaney and company have tried to sell the property to the city at half its appraised value for years. Two issues seem to bother the city. One, they can't figure out how to manage a wetland. According to the parks and recreation, if it can't be converted to a soccer field, they don't want it. Apparently, walking and birding are not considered "real" recreation. Fo some foolish reason, some of us consider open space to also be recreation land. If acquired and made into public open space, this wetland would tie into a total of 60 acres right off main street. Second, the city is holding onto the potential plan to put a bypass running from Highland to Oak street. This bypass is not expected to be part of the city plans for the next 20 years; however, at current costs the bypass would run around $50 million, so in 20 years...... Additionally, you can bet that if Delaney builds here, he's not going to be putting in "affordable housing" and a bunch of high-end home owners are not going to allow a bypass through their community. Actually, if the city acquired the land now, they'd have an easier time getting their bypass because they wouldn't have to condemn and purchase extremely expensive high density housing. My personal opinion is that the wetland is sitting in the city's blind spot and will thus remain a lost opportunity.

Berrymountain, I'm all for installing some beavers in the reflection pool. Great idea.
Thanks fo rthe information... byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Delaney and Comany tried to sell this to the city for half the appraised value?

The city already has numerous parks that are dearly in need of attention, and has also drained another fund buying 2 more acres/lots (Burke Park.) The lack of funding, does not seem to slow down the city so why didn't they bite on this one?

Also, your knowledge of a possible bypass and the financial repercussions almost sound like a "set up." What on earth? Maybe the Jabobson and the commissioners are all buying those parcels from Delaney.

Seems I remember something about "failure to disclose" regarding real estate sales/law. Any "developer" has the obligation to disclose anything known or suspected (past, present, future) to purchasers. Called DISCLOSURE.

You think Delany would certainly disclose this to future buyers...after all, he and the little beaver feeder are both licensed agents in Montana.

I think a few gophers and a skunk or two, might allow us to recreate the natural habitat, the beavers were use to enjoying. And just think, the little wee ones can walk from the Story Mansion Office Building, down the street and peer through the bars at the wildlife. Illeana might even be able to charge a fee or something, maybe she'll start up a non-profit/charity to feed and care for the little guys. Your thoughts.
