The assumption is incorrect!

Service Non Compris, think about it!
I was rather intigued with the restaurant review post, so much so that I have decided to be much more diserning when I go out to eat.

To Insure Proper Service, TIPS, they are not just something you inadvertantly have to leave out of guilt!

If your receipt offer's percentage breakdowns for the service you received, if it was poor service, what percentage would you leave?

I, now, will consider 0%.

I have eaten in many places on the Planet, and am all for service Non Compris.

Guten appetite!

Service and cook staff know A-holes when they see them. 3 second rules apply. I'm all for telling customers to blow it out their backsides.

If the customer wants to take out their stress on a restaurant crew, then quid pro quo. If you treat an establishment with patience and respect, then you'll get it in return. If you want to be a pushy A-hole, then you'll get treated the same way in return.
RE: that's fine. by2ndMonkey1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
I'll bet you're a "cook" not a "Chef". Maybe that's the mentality that holds you back in all your life choices. And if you're a server, you obviously don't have the attitude that will keep you in that line or any other for long term.
Shoot, you probably work at McDonald's anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

3 second rule -the Health Department and Management would differ with you, wholeheartedly, to the point of dismissal!!!
Montana is NOT a "Right to Work" State byberrymountain1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
The "servers" here have no idea how lucky they have it, and neither does the general public.

In "Right to Work" States, the servers wages are about $3.50 per hour. Basically, the servers in those states do not even receive a paycheck, as they are forced to claim a percentage of their food sales/beverages adult and non alcoholic included. What that means is that if those servers get "stiffed" for whatever reason, it actually costs them money.

In Montan servers receive at least "Minimum Wage," and I do not know if they are required to "claim" a percentage of tips based on their food and beverage sales. Servers here have it pretty darn good from what I understand. Cocktail/Bar waitress' and server's also rake in the bucks, mostly tax free if not completely tax free.

I'm happy to leave a gratuity, as long as the server has given courteous and reasonable attention to my requests.

Tips for servers.
Do NOT walk up to a table, when it is convenient for YOU and interrupt a conversation if at all possible.

If the plate is empty, don't ask if we are "done." Do you think we're gonna lick it clean when no one is looking? Just quietly remove it.

The DRINKS...Obviously regarding non-alcholic. Just refill them unless we look like we're going to leave. If the business charges for refills on soda, coffee or tea, I doubt we'll be back. Just refill the water and soda.

Try very, very hard, not to let us know that you'd rather not be serving us. We'd like to think that you have pride in serving people, because that is what most of us do. We serve people...Pretty normal.

Even the President of The United States serves people. So, get the chip off your shoulder of figure out another line of work. A good attitude in the restaturant business is likely quite lucrative. Laugh you way to the bank with a big smile.
RE: Montana is NOT a "Right to Work" State byellofoto1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
What exactly... does... the President serve people?

I know plenty of servers, and many other people in a service industry. I dishwashed for long enough to get the gritty details from a disgruntled server in the pit. I hate to choose sides, but quite frankly, people are a-holes to them the majority of time. I've seen people be downright abusive at times, simply because the water served wasn't "chilled enough."

I think that, subconsciously, a lot of people in a customer position, automatically get the "you're my servant now serve me" attitude. You might think you're being helpful by giving out your tips for servers up there, but that's rude.

In regards to your tips for servers:
Generally, servers have an order to the tables as to when they will serve or approach you. It generally occurs in the order in which each party arrived. They come by, ask if everything is alright, refill waters or whatever, then move on. It's called a flow. You might have seen these by watching rivers or something.

How often does an entire table of people clean off their plates? Come on. You're lucky your server asked if you were done. They have to. Because if you decide that you're not and you -do- want to lick the fat sauce off your plate then you get mad and don't tip anyway because "Betty just took my plate without asking if I was finished."

So, if your table all had Coke refills, and table 3 had all Sprite, and table 6 had all Dr. Pepper, table 8 had all iced tea... Are you going to expect your lovely server to remember what each table had when you probably couldn't do it yourself, let alone if each person at each table had something different? Mellow out, just say "yes please, thank you."

When your mother sat everyone down for dinner, did you expect her to do these things for you? Did you eat your mother's hard work with that mouth? Granted your ma wasn't expecting a tip, but she expecting a thank you, which in the service industry is the same thing.

It's common courtesy and common sense. Don't be a demanding jerk. If your server is slammed, it might take a while, and respect that, he/she is trying, and with 15+ people who are all ready to leave before they sit down, it gets tough, and very high stress.

We all may serve people, but most of us don't have to depend on a tip to buy groceries or gas, and believe me, even if they do get paid minimum wage, tips included, it's still not going to pay rent, not in this town.

Bottom line is treat your server with respect, and they will treat you the same.
Smile at your server, treat them like a friend.

The "servers" here have no idea how lucky they have it, and neither does the general public. (berrymountain)

All right. I waited tables in high school in Wyoming. Yes in Wyoming when I was serving I only made $3.50/hour.

I also waited tables all through college. Here in Montana I made $5.15/hour.

That's a difference of $1.65/hour. "and the "servers" here have no idea how lucky they have it, and neither does the general public." (berrymountain)

I hardly think that it is lucky. Yes on a good/busy night I would go home with $300. Which is usually a Friday or Saturday night (and that's if you are able to get these shifts because everyone wants them). Sunday through Thursday nights, if after only having a handful of tables, then having to tip out (cooks/dishwashers/bussers/hosts/bartenders) you might barely make 20 bucks after it's all said an done. Especially when people don't leave 20% (2ndmonkey). Servers get stiffed often enough - that is why they have added those tags onto receipts.
Just in case people don't know (or are too ignorant).

Basically, the servers in those states do not even receive a paycheck, as they are forced to claim a percentage of their food sales/beverages adult and non alcoholic included. (berrymountain)

Actually servers are required to claim 20% of their sales. So yes berrymountain you have hit the nail on the head there.

What that means is that if those servers get "stiffed" for whatever reason, it actually costs them money. (berrymountain)

YOU SIR are a genius. Good thing everybody doesn't think like you....

I know most haven't trained at the CIA - Culinary Institute of America. However, many wait-staffers have a go-getter attitude and go home with $3-400 a night.

I worked in a restaurant, as a bartender, busboy, dishwasher and various other stages in the kitchen except chef. I'll never forget the night I went home with a $634 wad of cash (just from tips!) , having worked from 5:00 to 11:30.

The job of the president is to serve the people of the United States. Most of us are employed in one form or another, and therefore serve someone, or the general public.

Regardless of our status, respect must be given to be received. I think Jane Fonda's visit to Manhattan proved that point a few years back...

He's been serving the people a big load of BS for 7 years. (sorry...couldn't resist) But politicians don't know any different.

As for respect...it has to be earned. Treat people like you want to be treated. It's really a no brainer.

Printing out the percentage figures... by2ndMonkey1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
...I think it more so gives the servers the assumption that they will at least get 15%, if service is, in fact poor, that potentially gives alot of leeway (0-14%) of at least leaving something!

Poor service doesn't deserve anything, that's so obvious!
It's like getting an "F" on your report card, you get grounded for a month and have to do many more chores around the house!!!
tips or no tips bySissy1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I believe this person has hit on something. The frustration is not with the waiter (usually) it is with the business owner-THEY ARE THE CHEAP ONES. Tips have lost their meaning. It was once, based on satisfaction of service. Not how good the food was or how cool the environment was. It is now used to help the owners to make sure THEIR employees can make a living. So don't yell out the messenger-try talking to the owner.
Yes, yes, yes... byBozemaniteNo314231 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Hire wages for restaurant staff with service Non Compris.

Service (non) compris: service charge (not) included in the listed menu prices (but invariably included on the bill).

Bon appetit!
