Starky's is a Mom & Pop too! byBozemaniteNo314232 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I think Starky's is a real hit. Great service, great food and an alway's fascinating crowd from in and out of town. Mmmmmm. They'll alway's get my vote for Bozeman's Best

I'd really like to see some active banter or debate on this site, but maybe what has to be done here is to be able to even name mom and dad resturants in Bozeman, as opposed to rating them. Or to include those that no longer exist. In which case Manny's, the Cowboy Cafe, and the Pines get my vote, in that order.
Greek 2 Me byaaf12 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
One of my favorites is It's Greek To Me. It started out as a "Mom and Pop"
place until 'Pop' died and now 'Mom' is trying to keep it going. The food is outstanding, hot and made to order.
Manny's byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Manny's "was" the best restaurant. I remember the "hashbrowns" specifically. How long ago was that? Showing our age. Only a Bozemanite would remember Manny's!

The "Pickle Barrel" is still good, but NOT what it was. (Did they ever use good quality meat? Maybe I just thought the meat was good. Oh well...) The turkey reminds me of the "Jennie O" brand, kind of gelatiny. The young kids that take the orders, and make the food, are really great at customer service. Still a great place!

I have said before that Stacey's is my favorite. I just wish it was a bit closer, but then again-it's easier to get in since not a lot of people will drive there to eat.

I also like the Pita Pit and Starky's for lunch. Pickle Barrel is okay, but Starky's has em licked.

I have heard The Nova is excellent. Any reviews on that? I haven't been yet.

Hey there cowgirlmedic! We've eaten at the Nova Cafe a few times since it's opened and really enjoyed it. The wait staff is on the ball and the food (breakfast) is outstanding. The only downside so far is that the last couple of times I tried to eat there, there's been a line out the door, which is probably a good thing for them! Check 'em out.
RE: my faves byTahoe192 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Best of luck at the Nova. We've gone there multiple times for breakfast and lunch. Usually we are treated as an inconvenience. The food is usually great, although some things seem pricey for what you get. To each there own, but it's on the bottom of the list for us.

For a great breakfast, I really like Main Street Overeasy, even though there are always huge lines on the weekends!
Danie and Tahoe bycowgirlmedic2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Thank you Danie, that is exactly what I have heard about that restaurant. I will be trying them soon. They come highly recommended by a few friends of mine who tend to eat out a lot!

Tahoe-I will definitely try Overeasy. I have heard they are fantastic also. Too bad about your experience at The Nova. I have only heard good things about them. Maybe try again...they might have been having a bad day.
La Tinga Anyone? bydanie0062 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Cheap, quick, authentic Mexican and wonderfully yummy - need I say more?
Are the staff at "La Tinga's" ILLEGAL? byberrymountain2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I want to know. After returning (Texas, California) we returned to get away from the "Illegals."

Do not attack me for asking this question. It is legitimate, and I have every right to know.

If you want to attack me for asking, then do so in a constructive way and post "Illegal Aliens" on this blog. Then we will discuss the massive rate of TB, Hepatitis, Identity Theft, Hospitals closing because illegals use them for FREE MEDICAL CARE, Schools and the taxpayers that are FORCED to supply "bilingual" teachers, welfare fraud and finally last but not least the subject of watching illegals burn the U.S. Flag!

So, back to my question. Are the employees U.S. Citizens? If so, I am happy to give La Tinga a try. If not, I'll find out who to contact to report illegals. (Sound a bit harsh? We lived in the south/southwest around "illegal aliens" for years. We watched them rape the taxpayers of their tax dollars, and burn our flag.)

Whoa - why so angry with the crazy talk, berrymountain? You make yourself sound so narrow-minded. Sorry to see that you had such a horrible experience with the Latino crowd.

As far as I can tell, the owners are good 'ol Americans making great tasting stuff. I never gave the rest of the staff the residency status once-over based on who/what they looked like. Sorry. I think you're missing a little bit of heaven if you don't give them a try...Ok, that might be an overstatement, but the food is really good.
Unacceptable bysouthward2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Regardless of the topic, or your dares for people to challenge your logic, you have no business including the name of someone's business in the same breath as words like hepatitis, rape, theft, illegal, fraud and so on. Even more so since you admit you don't know the people you are calling out, or anything about their lives and status. Of course, you know these things will end up on Google.

Try the food, meet the people. I suggest this because I suspect you wouldn't be quite so sure of your argument were you not hiding behind a friendly, anonymous screen name. Want to help this country? Go outside, do some community service, or work at anything as hard as those folks work to support their family and business. Meanwhile, get a life.

Mod: Chronicle should drop this libelous thread before it shows up in search engines. It should not be made their problem.
RE: Danie "Crazy Talk" bydanie0062 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
OK - I'll bite...I think I hit you in the funnybone, berrymountain. You seem to be stinging a bit.

C'mon, berrymountain. I know exactly what group you were referring to in your rant.

Fresh out of high school, I spent my time in the mid-'80's as a Nuclear, Chemical, Biological (NBC) Specialist in the Marines. With that MOS, I split my time between Camp Lejeune, San Deigo, California (stone's throw from Tijuana), and Okinawa, Japan working with an NBC engineering group designing chemical decon kits and HazMat ppe for our soldiers who were gearing up to fight in the first unjustified Gulf War. After that, I took advantage of the GI Bill, went to college and graduated in 3.5 years with honors. Today, I occasionally work for the Army Corps (ACE), designing partitioned lock systems for some of the largest waterways in the country. A week after Katrina hit New Orleans, some of my old Marine buddies and I packed our gear and sidearms, left our families for a few weeks and headed down to provide volunteer engineering support for the ACE and to help figure out how to address the immediate levee problems. My point is that I have seen quite a bit in my day, seen the best and worst in people, helped out in any way I was able, so be careful about passing weak judgment about my [lack of] service to our country.

I never really thought of myself as a liberal hypocrite. I guess if it means that I have a compassionate side for people trying to survive, then so be it. It beats being a self-serving, egocentric conservative xenophobe.

I could continue to debate berrymountain into the ground; maybe later.

Great posts, southward.

Eat a La Tinga. In fact, I'm going there for lunch today.
RE: Danie "Crazy Talk" bysouthward2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Danie, that was priceless. All that national service must have made you hungry. See you there!
RE: Danie's 1st LIE bydanie0062 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Take it easy, berrymountain. Stick and stones, you know...

Sorry that I unsatisfactorily summarized my military background for you. Clearly you never served in the military or you would know how mos assignments work (unless you were in the army or air force; I think they call it something else).

I'll bore you with more details: I enlisted about 2 months before I graduated from high school because I couldn't afford to go to college right away. After graduation, I hopped on a plane and flew to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. I went thru basic training, took several military occupational specialty (mos) placement exams and then was assigned my mos based on my scores and where they had a place for me. I wanted to be a pharmacy tech or a medic, but I was assigned to the NBC group instead. I didn't have much experience or interest with that stuff, but I didn't have a choice. They put you where they need you.

Berrymountain, you are confusing the NBC Spec. mos with an officer-track ROTC assignment which typically involves college. No college required for NBC training. Like most job titles, "NBC Specialist" is an overstatement. Most of the mos is grunt-like, custodial work, decontaminating equipment and the like. We all went thru tons of classroom training - about a year of hardcore work. I was lucky enough to be assigned to some interesting tasks, got on a developmental track, and eventually worked my way up into an engineering work group that was assigned to address hazardous material exposure issues like personal protective equipment fit and function, improving the usability of chemical agent antidote administrators and respiratory protection field-of-view, and so on. I didn't really have the opportunity do anything with the nuclear or biological side of the mos as it was only a four year assignment.

I intended to go to college to become a pharmacist, but became interested in engineering because of my experience in the Corps. I am indebted to the Marines for that as it led me down a path of great success in life so far, which allows me to sit here at my leisure and take part in this discourse.

If it makes you feel good to call me a liar, that's fine. You have to sleep with your accusations, not me. It's not really my prerogative to fib. I have nothing to gain by doing so. I already paid my dues in life.

I have to go and feed the horses now because they're standing at the gate, staring at me thru the window....kind of creepy. I'm headed to La Tinga after that! Please join me. The heat in the chicken and potato tinga will make your nose hairs stand on end. Yummy!
He isn't lying bycowgirlmedic2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
NBC specialists in the military don't go through college either. It's an MOS (military occupational study) that you can sign up for and the military trains you for.

Before you question someone's military service, I suggest you research. Veterans don't take lightly to someone calling them a liar.

You are being very ignorant with your postings about illegal immigration. I am sure there is another forum where you can rant and rave about this...but really? Is immigration such a huge problem here in Bozeman that it should be posted about here? I don't think so.

I suggest you move to the southwest-there you can truly complain.
How About Cafe Zydeco bydanie0062 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Cafe Zydeco is another favorite of ours. They're a little more expensive, but heck, they sure make a great po' boy - any flavor. We like the cajun gyro, too. Ooh! I forgot that they serve tasty red beans and rice. Check them out.
Cafe Zydeco byArt2 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I heard it's a good place but I don't go there because I think the owner is an immigrant from Louisiana, who crossed the border into Montana without permission.
Some of those Cajuns speak French and were originally from Canada.

Oh Geez, Art. Great point. What was I thinking?

The facts regarding illegal immigrants and the cost to U.S. citizens are easily obtained by anyone with an interest. I am surprised that anyone would call the statement of such facts "ignorant."
