A message from BozemanTalks

Hi, I am probably the primary admin/moderator on BozemanTalks. In light of some recently posted frustrations, I thought I would explain how the content is displayed, and if there will be any improvements.

First, I do watch daily and throughout the day at what is being posted on BozemanTalks. The “Featured Talk” is posts largely picked by myself to be featured. I look for interesting, potentially engaging posts or posts with interesting comments to feature. So if you want your post to be featured, make good and engaging posts, give your view point on something, don’t just ask a question, and a photo doesn’t hurt either.

The “Your Talk” section which is just under the “Featured Talk” is all the recently posted or commented on posts (that are not featured). This means a couple of older posts could sit right at the top of the list because of all the commenting that is taking place.

Another way to view the content on BozemanTalks would be to select “DISCUSSIONS” on the navigation bar. This will display all discussions in the order of most recently posted. You can also filter the posts by Category or even by time (today, this week, month, etc).

With all that said, we are always looking at ways to improve the site and will continue to do so. We are currently in the process of deploying two new widgets, one for displaying the “most recently commented” and another widget that will provide the category list but in widget form. Both of these widgets will be deployed on the home page in hopes it will be easier for all of you to find the content you are interested in. There are other discussions and work being done with the Instant Journalist crew to provide a better user experience and we hope to roll these features out soon.

On behalf of the daily chronicle, I would like to thank you all for your participation and want to invite you to share your user experience with us.

-Thank you

****UPDATE****

You may notice on the home page there is a new widget that will let you sort by category. We will be moving this widget to the top probably tomorrow. We will also be changing the “Your Talk” from a list of “most recently commented” posts to a chronological list of posts starting with the most recent. We will then replace the current “Your Discussions” Widget with a new widget that will display a list of most recently commented posts. Also, if you click on “your page” on the navigation bar, you should be able to see a list of posts you have created so if you want to monitor them that is also another way to quickly find them.

In addition, in the next few weeks we intend to roll out a drop down menu that will let you decide how you want the posts on the front page to be sorted and will remember your preference.

not a bad site at all... byBroadway1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
it's funny this was an idea i'd had about a month before this site came out. i'm sure it was in the works for much longer than i'd had it on my mind though! anyhow i think the site is great and i have no problems sifting through the discussions.

here's something that would be cool though: youtube has a feature where you can link up your cellphone to your youtube account and then post videos directly from your phone. THAT's sweet. if you could figure out something like that, for photos and/or video, it'd probably add a lot of interesting content to the site. i think people would dig that.

i'd also recommend either or both: a preview feature before posting an article (my last one came out goofy); limited abilities for the post author to edit their post after the original posting. common practice is to put a note that "this post was revised on ..." at the bottom. just a few thoughts. thx...
Admin doesn't have all those options bybcmontana1 month ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
All the people who are asking for this feature and that feature to be added are assuming that it is as easy as flipping a switch, or installing a module. That is just not the case for most. The Admin is limited to what the software offers, and what widgets are available. You favorite feature you've seen elsewhere may not even be possible, short of the admin writing his own.

I still maintain that the Instant Journalist software is immature. Even their own site looks amateurish ( http://www.instantjournalist.com ). Why did the Chronicle make such a poor choice? Drupal, Joomla, or even PHPBB would have been far better choices, and there are thousands of open-source add-on modules available for these mature software packages. I suspect some sort of marketing gimmick by Instant Journalist, because I just don't see that it is competitive on its merits alone.

well a phone->photo widget wouldn't be that hard. at least i'm sure i could do it in unix/php with the help of a cron job, an email address (after all, that's all an SMS is, a glorified email), and some basic authorization/flagging procedures to keep out spam. video would be tougher because it's gotta be able to decode all the different formats that cell phones produce video in, then re-encode that into a useable video for the display platform.

and as for a preview feature, FCKeditor (open source) is a good example of what's available - for free or cheap anyway - to give your users some basic html-formatting capabilities in a forum-type environment.

i'd say that the IJ site looks pretty bland, and unfortunately it gives no details about platform requirements. there are tons of CMS options out there though that they could've chosen from though, i'm a fan of wordpress/mu myself.
RE: widgets bybcmontana1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Well, one of the big selling points of Instant Journalist is the ability for someone with basically no experience to set up, customize, and run a CMS. Not to cast aspersions on Pooterman, for I have no idea of his admin experience.

So saying that you could whip something out in PHP and create a cron entry assumes a level a technical ability that most people don't have. Besides, why would the Chronicle pay some programmer or sys admin to do something like that when there are so many other better choices in CMS that already have tons of add-on modules built and tested? I haven't used WordPress myself, but it looks pretty good, has 1,905 plug-ins available on its site (yes, I counted them), and it's FREE.

Sorry, I am dragging this thread into too much technical detail, while I don't even know if it's the lack of features and organization that is the cause for lackluster participation. But it boggles the mind to understand why someone at the Chronicle chose uninspiring, feature-poor, unpopular, near beta-level software to run their community forum!

WordPress!!! Maybe it's too late as you're already set up. Thanks for the update, Pooterman.
RE: widgets bybecker1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Wordpress can be used as a CMS, but it's not easy to set it up that way (trust me). I think an excellent choice would be drupal or even plone. The ideal solution would be a Digg clone, though.
Not for lack of advertising bybcmontana1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Today (5/10/8) the Chronicle inserted and ad for this site RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of a leading story on the front page above the fold. No one else can even BUY that kind of advertising, no matter HOW much money they'd want to spend!

And STILL they can't attract a decent amount of participation here?

Wow, maybe they oughta start bribing people to post here.

I posted a fair number of comments, although I'm probably lucky that mine aren't censored, seeing as how I am a tad critical of their efforts. :-) Okay, I'll stop trying to monopolize this thread and see if others have any thoughts.

I have no desire to run around deleting posts/comments form people I don't like or don't agree with or for that matter the ones that attack the site or the Chronicle. You can attack us or the site and unless it is inappropriate you are entitled to a public display of your viewpoint and it is not our desire to deny that. Obviously we hope that overall everyone enjoys the site.

Ok, now we know "who" to address with our ideas for the blog.
Good Job Advertising The "Bozeman Talks" byberrymountain1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Hey,

We all get "perks," in our lines of work. Work at a hot dog stand, and you probably get a discount on your weiner. Work at a salon, probably get a pretty descent deal when you get your hair done. Car dealer, builder, painter, cabinet maker, it's all fair.

Glad the Chronicle has set out to "advertise this" and on the front page too! Awesome! That's just a "perk" the Chronicle has a right to exercise.
RE: Good Job Advertising The "Bozeman Talks" bybcmontana1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I was really going to shut up and stay out of this now, but your praise of the Chronicle's advertising is too much for me to stay silent!

I think all advertising is a necessary evil in our capitalistic world. As a business owner, I love capitalism, and I pay for advertising myself.

But NO, I do NOT think it's okay, and certainly not a "Good Job" to stick advertising RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A STORY ON THE FRONT PAGE! The Chronicle is trying to drive people to this site (which is fine), so when it becomes popular they can sell advertising on this site (which is fine). But it is NOT FINE to plug their own ventures in NEWS ARTICLES. That's NOT what a NEWSPAPER does.

I accept advertising in my paper and elsewhere, and it is easy to scan the bottom of the page and see if there's something that catches my eye. But I do not appreciate this invasive placement of advertising.
RE: Good Job Advertising The "Bozeman Talks" bychopsui1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
This is a business venture by the chronicle, so of course they are going to advertise it. The people that run the newspaper have every right to place ads at their digression. If you don't like them you can state a newspaper and have no ads on the front page....my one piece of advice is that they should put the newest comments at the top of the page rather than the bottom

When you say... byBozemaniteNo314231 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
..." I am probably the primary admin/moderator on BozemanTalks", is that like being "A little pregnant!!"

People don't like the structure of this blog, it is difficult to get around and see what's new. I tried clicking on the "Today" and the "This Week" tab's, all I got was a BLANK page for each click. I think this does need some cleaning up.
RE: When you say... byPooterman1 month ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
First it appears that this list will not display the "Featured" posts so I will look into adding that to the list. Second, I just clicked on both "Today" and "This Week" and they both work for me. When I clicked on "Today" there was one post so I would guess if you got a blank page it was because there was no new non-Featured posts. When I clicked on "This Week" there was only 3 listed. Now I am going to look into the "Week" and "Monthly" filter because I think if you click on say "This Month" but it is the first day of the new month I don't think you will get the past months worth of posts just that day since it is the first day of "This Month". So I will be looking into that and look at ways of improving those filter options.

This blog should be like a cookie jar. Not sure what's in there, but know it'll be good.

I think categories such as "Politics" are no good.

No categories. Loose em'!

Simplify the blog please: Most Viewed, Most Commented, Most Recently Posted. Something like that.

The categories take forever to scroll through. One page worth is more than enough. Pages are no good. Loose em' if no one has commented in say a week.

Just some thoughts. Thanks for your work.

Ahhh! Meant to give a star, vote to Cowgirlmedic on the Miley blog. Hit the (REPORT ABUSE) button instead! oooppps.

Fix it, didn't mean to report cowgirlmedic. Dont' give her a black eye over my mistake. :(

Can you add... byBun Bun1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
a comment count to the Home Page thread lists? Or bump threads with new posts to the top of the queue? It would be nice to see at a glance when there are new posts.

Other wise; Nice, Very Nice!
RE: Can you add... byPooterman1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Bun Bun - this post started "because" the site was originally set up to "bump threads with new posts to the top of the queue". Now, all the posts under the "Featured" list (the box with four posts in it at the top of the home page) are now all chronologically listed starting with the newest. All posts do display the number of comments and the number of views. We have also added the "Most Active Discussions" widget (Topics that have the most recent comments) and the "Most Viewed Discussions" widget (The most popular discussions).

Hey, did you remove "report abuse" from cowgirlmedic that I goofed up? Give her a star instead. Sorry.

Say, just read the want ads in today's paper. Looking for old cedar fence posts. (As if I'd be lucky enough to find someone selling/giving those away!) Anyway, what about inserting a few "BozemanTalks.com" ads in the want ads?

Just an idea. Thanks. Also, can you answer as to why so few people are "commenting?" Looks like alot of readers. Just wondering...
Alright Pooter...What's going on? byberrymountain1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
My post on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION was doing very well, and now it's gone....

How come? Seen a couple others posts disappear.

Any way for you to message bloggers/posters within this blog, or our registered email? Thanks
RE: Alright Pooter...What's going on? byPooterman1 month ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Your post was not removed. Its just not the latest post so it is no longer on the front page. If you do a search for "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" it will be the first post on the list. I suspect this is the post you are referring to.

Say, just a thought. How about a more direct way to get a message to you the administrator, than "contact" with an email or phone number?

I'd sure like to remove a few topics I posted earlier, and clean up my own page. There seems to be little if any interest in most of them.

Thanks
