recycling

I'm not interested in paying extra to recycle, and so I drop it off for free at the bins. Is the city going to replace the Babcock Street bins? At this point people on the west side of town have to go to MSU or N. 7th which is really pretty inconvenient. Where I came from, the city built recycling in, gave us the bin too. We sorted the bin, i.e. tin on the bottom, then plastic, then card board & paper. Then you had to buy "city" trash bags for all the other stuff. if you just dumped everything in these plastic bags, technically it cost you more. The bags were about 50 or 60 cents each. You could buy an extra bin for $5 ea. & if you really got good at recycling you were buying less of these bags. The city wouldn't take them unless they were in these special bags. I think this city's new and current policy is anti-recycle. Any thoughts? Am I missing something since I am relatively new here?

Personally, I think what I'll save in gas and time will make the curbside affordable. I think as a family we'll do better with it.
As far as plastic bags the truly die hards who recycle those, probably wouldn't like the idea of using plastice that wouldn't be recycled to recycle plasic.
The west side does need more bins. I really think the bins do draw customers to a store that gives the city use of their parking lot. Roseaurs maybe should consider that. Or the Chronicle. Maybe the mall. Target/Costco. I'd think there are some unused bins somewhere, as they no longer populate the parking lot of the old Gibsons or the IGA.

Thanks for you comment. I am not sure what you mean about plastic to recycle plastic? THe bin? That's something you keep & reuse week after week. Personally I recycle enough that I have the smallest bin the city offers with a family of five. This has only been for about four months we I was settled enough to really set up a system, but then the bins were taken away. I like the idea of a local west side place. I hear that Vann's is trying to get a statewide TV recycling program going where they'll take apart old tv's and properly dispose them. Maybe on that Laramie Street or something? It is off the main drag by only one street which is actually good for traffic flow & getting out to do your three minutes of recycling before going on. I am less interested in giving a super store my business over a local proactive store. (I have no affiliation w/ Vann's) I do wan the city to consider something soon though. The price of gas, and them only being able to accept 1000 customers etc. It just makes more sense.

Are there bins at Home Depot anymore? I never make it to that side of town anymore really, but when I lived way out North I recall Home Depot having some on the north end of their lot. Huckleberry's makes more sense for recycling. Curbside is the way to go. I envy Portland, OR and their curbside recycling. Why waste the gas to drive and recycle? Defeats the point, yeah? I'll pay more, as long as the independent contractors around town who are already doing recycling pick up don't get screwed.

Check out the city's web site for bin locations:

Sorry, I don't know how to make this a live link ...

I was just wondering about this myself after my second trip to the Walmart parking lot after passing by the old locations on Babcock and the old Gibsons spot.

I used to drop of my recyclables on the way to T&C for groceries so it wasn't inconvieniant and didn't use extra gas. Therefore I wasn't interested in curbside. Not sure what will happen now.

I was pretty angry at Jeff Kraus' statement that "Bozemanites need to put their money where their ethics are" and buy into curbside recycling. There's a limited amount of $ that I'm able to donate to ethical causes (hospice being one of them). If I can continue to recycle for free that leaves me about an extra $100/yr that can be donated.

I have a friend who stopped recycling because he said that one time when he was at the bins, the city's trash vehicle-compactor, drove up and proceeded to empty all bins into the truck for compacting.
At the time I dismissed this because the guy's a reneck conservative from Big Sky who only looks at trees as condos waiting to be built.
But this morning I was at the bins and the city truck was over at Applebees, emptying their dumpster. The truck then proceeded over to the cardboard bins at K Mart and proceeded to unload those into the same truck.
So is it possible my friend is correct?
Is recycling in Bozeman merely a feel good activity?

Are you sure that the Applebee's dumpster wasn't a "carboard only" dumpster? Many business that go through lots of boxes have those.

Are you sure your friend saw all the bins or just the carboard bins being emptied into the compactor?

Well, I didn't beleive my friend at all when he told me that.
I did drive over to the Applebee's dumpster and there was just one, it did not say "cardboard only" and it looked like a universal dumpster. I didn't go into the dumpster (because I wasn't hungry and would go to other dumpsters first if that were the case).
I do have to think if the city was doing this, they'd be "caught" by now.
